To Game or Not to Game? by Maanav

Should you allow your children to game? Are you letting games take over their lives or maybe you are helping to grow their imagination? Video games could teach kids some very important life skills such as how to work as a team and to adapt to changing situations. This is proven by Dr Jonathen Bartholomew, a Paediatrician in Utah, who said “Many video games teach kids how to delegate, work as a team, and prioritize. Internet-enabled games that let kids play with their real- life friends often require collaboration and division of tasks to beat the level.” If someone games too much, they could be addicted and this is recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as a mental health disorder. If someone is addicted their brain growth may slow down. Do not worry this will only happen in extreme cases, it is not normal. To prevent it you should set limits for how long your children can play every day. The recommended daily amount from the NHS for children under 11 is 1 hour a day and for children 12 and above is 2 hours a day. Did you know while playing video games kids feel less pain? This is because to feel pain you need conscious attention. Not only do games help with physical pain they can also help improve your mental health. This is why you should let your children play video games but only in moderation. This means you should set time limits for how long they can play every day.
