Student Guide to Studying at Home

Here are some great tips for studying at home - whether this is during a lockdown or some great advice for general studying. It is really important to get into good habits for effective learning but it can be hard to know what these are. We've all done it! Stay up late, complete an assignment last-minute, have a bunch of distractions around. However, removing these habits early will make life easier as you continue through education and the work gets harder.

Find an area in your house where you can sit comfortably and focus. Make it separate to your relaxation space, ideally away from a TV and other distractions like your phone
Set up your work space

Zoning out? Note-taking keeps your mind engaged. Don't just copy everything - think about what is actually important
Take notes - don't just copy!


If you have one, follow the schedule provided by your school. If you just have a list of things to study, break it down into tasks and plan to do the hardest ones when you have the most energy. Give yourself deadlines if you haven't got any so you actually complete the work
Planning for success


Hardness your imagination and picture you're at school and not at home. Lock your phone away if you need to - don't be afraid to ask your parents to intervene (it'll impress them!)
Lessen distractions

You probably have a schedule for you lessons, but if things are becoming difficult to focus on, take a 5 minute break and come back to it. Don't forget to have regular screen breaks too
Change it up to stay focused

Get up every once in a while. Have a snack.
Keep your breaks short and frequent


Use a journal to track your progress or any questions you might want to ask your teacher about the work.
Write it down as you go

Don't forget that your learning is ultimately your responsibility but there are plenty of people around that want to help you if you need it. Studying at home can be hard but remember that education is the key to success in whatever you do and these are life skills that will serve you well throughout life. Keep time for friends but don't forget to give your brain a workout too!
