Explaining Coronavirus to Younger Children

Young children will have heard something about Covid-19 so here are some tips to help explain and provide the correct information. With social media, there can be a lot of confusing information and rumours going around so it will be important to make sure children are getting the best possible information.

Most children would have hear about the virus or seen people wearing masks. This is your opportunity to keep them informed and set the tone
Don't be afraid to talk about Covid-19

Try answering their questions instead of volunteering too much information as this might be overwhelming and cause some anxiety
Be developmentally appropriate

Be open and invite them to discuss what they may have heard and how they feel. This is an opportunity to provide any corrections for false information they may have heard.
Talk to them about their worries

Help your kids feel empowered by teaching them what they can do to keep safe. Show them how to ask their hands or how to sneeze properly
Focus on what they can do to keep safe to keep the conversation positive

When you notice yourself feeling anxious, take time to calm down before trying to have a conversation or answering your child's questions. They are very perceptive and can pick up on your emotions.
The hardest one: manage your own anxiety
